On December 13, 2024, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) released two important helmet standard updates, namely ASTM F1447-24 for recreational bicycle and roller skating helmets and ASTM F1045-24 for ice hockey helmets. These two new standards replaced the previous versions of ASTM F1447-18 and ASTM F1045-22, respectively.

Helmet testing

As one of the most widely used helmet types in the market, the new requirements of ASTM F1447-24 for helmets used in leisure bicycles and roller skating are particularly noteworthy, as it recognizes the necessity of lightweight and ventilated helmets.

Please note that it is understood that some well-known brand retailers have a shorter transition period for applying standards to their products, far below the 24 months specified in ASTM announcements. Some well-known brands may soon only accept leisure bicycles and roller skating helmets that meet the new standards for sale. Intertek suggests that suppliers promptly inquire with the brand about their regulatory requirements.

Helmet testing

This change presents both challenges and opportunities for helmet manufacturers. On the one hand, there is a "millimeter level" game between lightweight design and safety performance; On the other hand, the huge leisure bicycle and roller skating helmets will usher in another iteration, and whoever can comply first will have priority in seizing the market.

The Intertek professional technical team has launched a synchronous response, fully interpreting the new standard requirements, upgrading the testing plan, and equipping an innovative materials laboratory. Whether it is sports helmets (bicycles/roller skating/ice hockey, etc.) or professional protective helmets (motorcycles/electric vehicles/industrial) for this new regulation change, they can quickly provide a one-stop solution for market access and product upgrades, helping helmet companies comply with and innovate.
